It’s not often that you see companies own up to internal issues. An article in today’s WSJ “The Sun Shines on ‘The Cloud'” describes the phenomenal growth of cloud computing and also highlights some of Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) recent service issues, one of which was due to a power failure at a data center in Virginia. One of their customers who experienced a service disruption, EveryBlock, is quoted as follows: “Frankly, we screwed up. AWS explicitly advises that developers should design a site’s architecture so that it is resilient to occasional failures and outages such as what occurred yesterday, and we did not follow that advice”. How refreshing. One can only hope for that line of thinking to blow into Washington, DC.
